Review: L’Étranger by Albert Camus

Theme: Indifference.

‘The Outsider’, or ‘The Stranger’. 1942.

A short story about a white man who murders a nameless Arab man for the heck of it in French colonial Algiers. He is then perceived as the victim because of his non-conformism to society’s emotional expectations.

Western society spends generations analysing the story as a classic of existential literature instead of considering how the ‘hero’ Mersault accepts and supports racial and gender based violence.

The end.

I give it 1 out of 5 pretentious literary approvals.
